James Oliver Cromwell was born January 27, 1940 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
He grew up in Manhattan, New York. His mother was an actress Kay Johnson and his father – an actor, director and producer John Cromwell, got into the black list during the McCarthy era. James was educated at Hill College in Middlebury, and the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), where he studied engineering.
