George Orson Welles was born May 6, 1915 in Kenosha (Wis.). With 15 years started playing in the theater, in 1933 he joined the troupe of Katherine Cornell. A year later left her, and as an actor and director went to the team of the Federal Theatre. In 1937, Wells and producer D.Hausman organized their own entreprise – “Mercury-tietr.” Here, Wells got international recognition for its innovative for its time approach to staging of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: dressed in modern costumes the actors playing on the stage without scenery, quaint lighted light. In 1938 the company “Mercury-tietr” began to act with weekly auditions. Mockumentary dramatization of HG Wells science fiction novel War of the Worlds was played so realistic that many listeners believed the Martians landing in New Jersey, and panicked. The halo of notoriety Wells decided to try his hand at film. In October 1940, he completed work on his first movie – Citizen Kane (Citizen Kane). By all accounts, debut 25-year-old filmmaker (though not earned commercial success) became the only film that after the arrival of sound cinema has had a significant impact on world cinema.
Citizen Kane was made for the studio “RKO-redio Pictures.” For the same studio Wells put Magnificent Ambersons (The Magnificent Ambersons, 1942) and strangers (The Stranger, 1946), and for “Columbia Pictures” – The Lady from Shanghai (The Lady from Shanghai, 1947). Later, his films often have the status of independent productions with occasional funding sources and unreliable production base (Mr. Arkadin – Mr. Arkadin; al. Name – confidential communications – Confidential Report, 1955; Touching Evil – Touch of Evil, 1957; Macbeth – Macbeth, 1947; Othello – Othello, 1952; Falstaff – Falstaff, 1965; Process – The Trial, 1962; The immortal story – The Immortal Story, 1968).
An excellent actor, Welles starred in all his films, also played in the films of other directors. One of his most famous works was the role of actor Harry Lime – spirited and unscrupulous businessman, speculating in the war on the “black market” (Third Man – The Third Man, 1949). In 1975, Wells was awarded the American Film Institute “For outstanding achievements in the cinema.” Wells died in Los Angeles October 10, 1985.
His worldwide fame Wells shall mainly Citizen Kane – life stories of newspaper magnate, bright and at the same time incomprehensible person, the prototype of which, with certain reservations, became U.R.Herst. Shooting with deep-optics and mobile camera narration with puzzling riddles, honed skills of performers (mainly actors from the “Mercury-tietr”) made this film a benchmark skill and cinematic expression.
