American actor, noted for exceptionally wide range of roles performed – from Distinguishing before the tragic.
 
Lemmon seven times nominated for “Oscar” for Best Actor and won for the first time in the history of this award in both actors’ nominations – for the title role (1973) and supporting actress (1955). The jury of the Cannes Film Festival was twice voted him the best actor – in 1979 and 1982.
Early years
Lemmon – one of the few Hollywood actors who could boast of a Harvard diploma. He drew the attention of even the University, after which he served in the Navy during the last months of World War II. As a young man worked in radio and television. The first role in the film – in the comedy “It’s going to happen to you” (1954). The following year he was awarded the “Oscar” for Best Supporting Actor – in the military drama “Mister Roberts” (1955).
Cooperation with Wilder
After such a promising start at the Lemmon was no shortage of suggestions, but basically it was the role – by his own definition – Aquatic clowns. Later roles
In 1970-ies. Lemmon’s repertoire continued to prevail as a “man in the street”, accidentally fall into the most unimaginable situations and forced painfully to extricate himself from them. One of his most tragic roles – Michael Douglas in the film “The China Syndrome” (1979) – was awarded the prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Similar awards won and the next major work in the Costa Gavras film “Missing.” In 1998 he was nominated for telepremiyu “Emmy”, but lost Ving Rhames, who immediately called Lemmon from the audience and presented him with the statuette – the more worthy candidates.
