American actor of Danish origin, best known for his role as Aragorn in the trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.”

Mortensen was born to a Dane and an American, grew up in Argentina and Venezuela, which enabled him to master the Spanish language. For this reason, it is quite in demand in the Spanish-language films. He started his acting career in the early 1980s on Broadway, and his early works were awarded the positive reviews of theater critics. In 1987 he married the lead singer of the punk band X, with whom he has a son.
In the movie, Mortensen made his debut relatively late – at 26 years old, playing with Alexander Godunov in the drama “Witness.” During the 1990s, he has been regularly engaged in supporting roles of negative characters: it can be seen in Sean Penn in “The Indian Runaway” (1991), with Al Pacino in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), and in the movie “The Prophecy “(1995) he played Lucifer himself, which extracts from the chest of the character Christopher Walken heart and devours it.
In the second half of the 1990s Mortensen gets increasingly less character roles, often with romantic flair. They allowed him to fully disclose his acting talent. Among the films of this period can be noted “Portrait of a Lady” (1996) with Nicole Kidman and “GI Jane” (1997) with Demi Moore. His most famous role – Aragorn – Mortensen got chance. Project Director (Peter Jackson), he changed his mind to take the role of Aragorn actor Stuart Townsend, arguing that he is too young to fulfill this role. After working in the three films of the “Lord of the Rings” Mortensen has become so popular that it is officially published on the Internet and the media a letter of apology to fans and asking them not to expect him to answer their letters, because letters are too many.
In 2005, Mortensen began working with David Cronenberg, the result of their work was the film “A History of Violence.” Later this cooperation successfully continued last significant film works Mortensen – the main role in the film “Eastern Promises” (2007), which many critics were quick to proclaim the best in his film career. For his role as Russian mobster Viggo Mortensen went to Russia to study the Russian language and understand Russian.
