The British actor, director, producer and writer, winner of the “Oscar” for Best Actor in 1942.

George William Crisp was born in a suburb of London in a large Scottish family of eight children. He received his education at Oxford University, then served as a soldier in the 10th Royal Hussars during the Anglo-Boer War.
In 1906, Crisp went to the United States. On the ship carrying it, he performed at a concert a few musical numbers, and thus attracted the attention of opera impresario John S. Fischer, who offered him a job in itself. Crisp took part in the tour Fischer in the US and Cuba, and then decided to seriously engage in theatrical career. In 1910, the system, by the time the name of George Donald, Crisp began working as a director at the famous playwright and director George M. Cohen. At the same time, he met with the director DW Griffith, with whom in 1912 he moved to Hollywood, where he decided to try his luck in movies.
From 1908 to 1930 Donald Crisp worked in Hollywood as an assistant Griffith and took 9 own films and has appeared in nearly a hundred silent films in small roles. The only exceptions were his work Griffith in the film “Birth of a Nation” in 1915 and “Broken Blossoms” in 1919, where Crispus were larger and more prominent role. During these years, he still occasionally appeared on the screen, playing in 1941, one of his most memorable roles – Gwilym Morgan in the drama of John Ford’s “How Green Was My Valley.” The film received ten nominations for an Academy Award, brought Donald Crisp “Oscar” for Best Supporting Actor.
In the early 1950s Crisp reached unprecedented success in Hollywood, becoming one of there most influential people. For many years he was a consultant and chairman of the finance company «Bank of America», which is why many film projects, favorite Crisp, received financial support from the company. The last time on the big screen Donald Crisp appeared in 1963 in the film “Spencer Mountain” with Henry Fonda in the title role.
Donald Crisp has been married twice, and both his marriage ended in divorce. The actor died in July 1974 at the age of 91 from complications following a series of strokes and was buried at the memorial cemetery in Glendale, California. His great contribution to the film industry was marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
