Son mother Claire Isabelle, who worked on the largest magazine publishers, Time Inc, and his father Alfred McCord, who worked in the US Department of State. His mother remarried to Henry Lewis III (son of the founder of the magazine Time Magazine), when Hurt was young.
Hurt graduated from high school Middlesex School in 1968, where he was vice-president of drama club and got the leading role in several school productions.
