Red Battons was born under the name Aaron Chuott 5 February 1919 in New York City, the son of Jewish immigrants. At 16, Aaron got a job as a porter at the tavern ‘Ryan’s Tavern’ in the City Island, Bronx. Through the image of a young man with red hair in a suit on shiny buttons, Chuott got the nickname from the leader of the orchestra, Charles’ Dinty “Moore, who called it ‘Redom Battonsom’ (eng. ‘Red Buttons’, literally’ red button ‘). Later Chuott began performing under his unusual middle name.
Battons worked with comedy partner Robert Alda, and in 1939 began playing in vaudeville, including the team ‘Minsky’s Burlesque’, four brothers Minsky. In 1941, Red’s Jose Ferrer chose to participate in the Broadway show ‘Admiral Had a Wife’, a comedy directed by Pearl Harbor. However debut, scheduled for Dec. 8, 1941, did not take place, because after the Japanese attack on the base show the show was inappropriate. Battons later joked that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, with the sole purpose – to prevent him to get to Broadway.
Yet in September 1942, the actor made his debut in the most famous street in New York – in the play ‘Vicky’ with the participation of the German-American actress Uta Hagen. A year later, Red took part in the show ‘Wine, Women and Song’, recent burlesque show in the history of New York, which covered the administration of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. Battons just was on the scene when the search began.
Once in the United States Air Force, Red in 1943 was successful in the ensemble cast of the Broadway show “Wings of Victory”, working with several future stars, including John Lee. Cobb, Mario Lanza, Karl Malden and John Forsythe. In 1944 Battons starred in the movie “Wings of Victory” (or rather, ‘Winged Victory’) in the same role, directed by George Cukor. During World War II Red repeatedly entertained American troops as a representative of European Theater.
After the war, the comedian went on Broadway career. In 1952 he took up the issue of his own variety show on TV-series, “Red Battons Show ‘, which lasted for three years and has achieved considerable success.
