Edward Montgomery Clift (Edward Montgomery Clift, 17.10.1920 – 23.06.1966) – American actor. He is known for a number of roles melancholic, sensitive members of the working class. During his cinematic career he has received four prizes Oscar.
Clift was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, William Brooks Clift, was vice-president of the National Bank of Omaha. At Clift had a twin sister and older brother Robert William Brooks Jr., who later became the father of an illegitimate son of actress Kim Stanley.
Mother of the future actor was adopted at the age of years. A considerable part of his life – a spouse and money – he spent trying to restore its origin; at eighteen she finally succeeded in this by finding a doctor once who took birth from her mother. It is in honor of Dr. Edward Montogomeri Ethel Fogg and called her younger son. According to biographer Clift, Patricia Bosworth, Ethel was the illegitimate daughter of Woodbury Blair and Mary Anderson, whose marriage was annulled shortly before Ethel born. Thus, the great-grandfather Clift – Montgomery Blair, Postmaster-General under President Abraham Lincoln and the great-grandfathers – Francis Preston Blair, a journalist and advisor to President Andrew Jackson and Levi Woodbury, a member of the US Supreme Court. However, these family ties have not been fully proven and are purely speculative theories.
Trying to be fully worthy of their new-found family (a goal that perform or failed), Fogg raised Clift and his brother and sister, as the true aristocrats. The mother taught the children at home, and with the help of the very best private teachers the US and Europe; despite the strong fluctuations in the bank account of his father, the children until adolescence did not attend a regular school. Adapt to normal life after this it was quite difficult, especially for Montgomery – his performance was far behind on the results of a brother and sister. Education Clift took place in France, Germany and Italy.
On Broadway Edward first came to thirteen; on stage it rather quickly succeeded, and he performed for ten years, until he moved to Hollywood. In the 1948th, he debuted on the big screen in the film ‘Red River’ (‘Red River’) with John Wayne.
The 1958th Montgomery declined an invitation to ‘Rio Bravo’ (‘Rio Bravo’); the role went to Dean Martin. The ‘Rio Bravo’ and also played John Wayne, and this could cause failure Clift – during filming of ‘Red River’ between the actors constantly there were conflicts, and Wayne simply refused to communicate with Edward outside the set.
In the same year Clift was first nominated for the Oscar as “Best Actor” for his role in ‘Search’ (‘The Search’). His sensuality and incredible skills helped him to create a character, which just wanted to take care of.
His love scenes with Elizabeth Taylor in “A Place in the Sun ‘(‘ A Place in the Sun ‘) became, in fact, the new standard for romantic scenes in the movie. Generally, ‘A Place in the Sun’, along with the classic 1953 film “From now and forever ‘(‘ From Here to Eternity ‘) and’ The Young Lions” of 1958 were the cornerstones of his career.
Clift was considered the main contender Marlon Brando (also, incidentally, was born in Omaha) – they both quickly went to success and played a similar character. Clift was one of the idols of James Dean; he sometimes called Edward just in order to hear his voice.
Edward turned down offers to play leading roles in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (‘Sunset Boulevard’), and in ‘East of Eden’ (‘East of Eden’). At some point, he began to receive incredible number of proposals and, of course, with all the right was simply not able to.
On May 12, 1956, during the filming of ‘Raintree County’ (‘Rayntree County’), Edward ran the car into a pole on the telephone line, while driving home from a party in Beverly Hills hosted by his co-star and close friend Elizabeth Taylor and her then-husband Michael Wilding. This catastrophe saw a friend of Taylor; He warned the actress, and she immediately went to the aid of a friend; her hands had pulled his tongue out of his throat in order to prevent imminent suffocation. The actor broke his nose, jaw, nasal septum, and received a number of injuries that required plastic surgery afterwards to recover. After a long recovery, he returned to the shooting; studio executives worry much because of the cost, but Clift predicted the success of the film – the audience literally crowds flocked to the show in order to find the differences between the old and the new shape favorite actor. Problems with pain in the affected parts of the body forced Edward to turn to alcohol and painkillers; previously it had been abusing such drugs – dysentery once heavily damaged his internal organs.
