Latif was born March 18, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. Her mother, Rita, was a teacher at Irvington High School, and her father, Lancelot Owens, – the police. His parents divorced when she was ten. The school Latifah played in various productions and musicals. Her stage name, Latifah, meaning “delicate” and “sensitive” in Arabic, gave her her cousin when she was only eight years old.
