His career in the film industry Houksvort began in the late forties, in the department of art in ‘London Films’. Soon after he became an assistant art director Vincent Korda. Together they worked on such feature films as “The Third Man” in 1949, directed by Carol Reed, ‘Outcast of the Islands’ (1951) and ‘sound barrier’ (1952) David Lean.
 
John Houksvort – British writer, producer and director, was born December 7, 1920 in London, UK. His career in the film industry Houksvort began in the late forties, in the department of art in ‘London Films’. Soon after he became an assistant art director Vincent Korda. Together they worked on such feature films as “The Third Man” in 1949, directed by Carol Reed, ‘Outcast of the Islands’ (1951) and ‘sound barrier’ (1952) David Lean.
A few years later, John John Houksvort became an independent director. His first independent work began movies ‘the man who was not there’ and ‘The Prisoner’, released in 1955. In 1957 Houksvort worked as an assistant producer at the making of the film ‘The Way Windom’, and two years later, in 1959, was made by a producer for the film ‘Tiger Bay’, for which also wrote the screenplay.
In the mid-1960s, John Houksvort switched to work in television, first as a writer for television projects ‘Stella Richman’s Rediffusion series The Hidden Truth’ in 1964, ‘Blackmail’ in 1965-1966 and the ‘Half Hour Story’ – with 1967 to 1971.
In 1967, after the success of the first television film about Sherlock Holmes, which was released in 1965 on the channel BBC, Houksvort wrote the script for another thirteen episodes devoted to the legendary characters of Arthur Conan Doyle.
For channel LWT in 1969, John Houksvort wrote and produced for release season detective series ‘The Gold Robbers’. The plot of the series begins with the fact that the airport lost a party of gold bars for the sum of 5 million pounds. Exciting chase robbers chained viewers across the country have screens every Friday of summer 1969.
In 1971, John Houksvort started creating one of the most successful of its projects. He began writing the script for the drama series “Up and down the stairs.” The series lasted five seasons on the air, from 1971 to 1975 and became one of the most popular dramas of the decade. The main roles in the series played, Gordon Jackson, David Lengon Jean Marsh and Angela Baddeley.
A huge international success ‘up and down the stairs’ in the middle of the seventies led to the fact that Houksvorta invited to write the script for the TV series ‘The Duchess of Duke Street’. The main role in the series performed Gemma Jones. Luxury decorations and costumes of the series is accompanied by autobiographical story about the life of Rosa Lewis, who suddenly became the owner of a luxury hotel in London at the beginning of the last century.
In 1984, John Houksvort returned to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote for Granada Television, perhaps the best scenario of all British adaptations of Sherlock Holmes today. The series is called ‘The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ first appeared on television screens in 1984. This time the main role in the movie performed by Jeremy Brett and David Burke, who later succeeded by Edward Hardwicke. The story of the famous detective did not leave the TV screens from 1986 to 1994 – “The Return of Sherlock Holmes ‘,’ Journal of Sherlock Holmes” and “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.”
Work on the TV version of Sherlock Holmes is the last major work Houksvorta and perhaps the best. They represented the most faithful and complete adaptation of literary stories of Arthur Conan Doyle’s on the small screen. Technically, for its time, these films were created with great skill, and while watching the paintings the viewer is immersed in the unique spirit of the age.
John Houksvort died on 30 September 2003, aged 82 years.
