Robert Downey Jr. was born in Manhattan, New York, the youngest of two children. His father – Robert Downey Sr. – director, actor and producer, and his mother – Elsie (n?e Ford) – also an actress. Father Downey – Irish and Jewish descent, and his mother – a German and Scottish descent. His father was born with the name Robert Elias, but changed his surname to Downey (like his stepfather James Downey), when he was a minor and wanted to enlist in the army.
At Downey had small roles in projects of his father as a child. He made his film debut at the age of five years and played a sick puppy in the movie “Corral” (1970), then at the age of seven years, starred in “Grisera Palace” (1972). At age 10, he lived in England and studied classical ballet, as part of a larger program. He grew up in Greenwich Village and went to the training center for the Performing Arts «Stagedoor Manor» in upstate New York when he was a teenager. When his parents divorced in 1978, Downey moved to California with his father, but in 1982 he left the Santa Monica High School and moved to New York to pursue an acting career.
At age 20 in 1985 Downey Jr. for one season joined the team that produces the popular American television show “Saturday Night Live.” After the experience in television, he finally decided to tie the fate with the cinema and moved to Hollywood. In 1987, Robert Downey got the lead role in the comedy James Toback “The Pick-up Artist.” After several works in the teen comedy Downey declared itself the role of a desperate teenage drug addict in the movie “Less Than Zero” (1987), and became a cult success. In 1992, when the screens out the film by Richard Attenborough’s “Chaplin,” in which the actor played the legendary comedian, actor’s game Downey Jr. has earned high marks, and the actor was awarded the BAFTA Award for Best Actor, and was nominated for the “Golden Globe” and “Oscar” in the category “Best Actor” (both awards in the same year went to Al Pacino for his role in the movie “Scent of a Woman”). Because of addiction, he divorced his first wife, singer and model Deborah Falconer, with whom he has a son Indio Falconer joint Downey. A watershed event in the life of Downey turned familiarity with producer Susan Levin on the set of the thriller “Gothic”, where he played together with Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz. Robert passed another course of treatment in Los Angeles for the sake of his love for Susan and cured, made her an offer of marriage.
Game actor received rave reviews and after the detective comedy “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” In parallel with this work Downey Jr. released an album of his own songs and performance under the name «The Futurist». The album’s release, Robert showed the public his great vocal and musical talents. In 2006, his performance as a mysterious Lionel, which comes into contact with the heroine Nicole Kidman in the movie “Fur”, has received the most enthusiastic responses of Film Critics.
However, the present rebirth Robert gets after it is approved for the lead role in the film “Iron Man”. After the film the studio literally bombarded actor different proposals.
In 2008 he published a Ben Stiller movie “Tropic Thunder,” which tells the story of actors who have got a real war, but I think it just filming. Played in the film by Robert Kirk Lazurusa, five-time winner “Oscar”, which for the sake of the new role of altered pigmentation of their skin. Brilliant game Downey Jr. earned him a second nomination for “Oscar” (the prize was given posthumously to Heath Ledger for the film “The Dark Knight”), a nomination for the “Golden Globe” and a nomination for the prize of the British Academy.
At the end of 2009 saw the release of Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes”, where paired with Jude Law, who plays Dr. Watson, Robert played the role of the famous detective Holmes. On the first weekend, the film broke all records at the box office, and Robert Downey Jr. won the “Golden Globe” in the category “Best Actor – Musical or Comedy.”
In 2010 he published a sequel to the film was shot on comics “Iron Man 2”. Robert has already signed up to participate in the third part of the film and in “The Avengers.”
In 2011 came the second part of the film Sherlock Holmes – “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” where the hero Downey Jr. is struggling with Professor Moriarty.
